Ik houd van out-of-the-box opdrachten. Een tijdje geleden kreeg ik de vraag voor iets bijzonders. Nadia zou gaan promoveren op long-covid en de longen spelen een belangrijke rol in haar onderzoek. Bij haar promotie wilde ze graag een groot goudkleurig borstsieraad in de vorm van de longblaasjes. Dat was een hele leuke uitdaging. Het vergde wat onderzoek; gieten in aluminium? Dat kun je heel mooi goudkleurig anodiseren dacht ik, maar gietaluminium blijkbaar niet. En het was te bros. Andere metalen worden te zwaar. Ik kwam uiteindelijk uit op de 3D-pen. Met een 3D-pen heb ik de longblaasjes in kunststof 'getekend' en daarna heb ik ze goudkleurig gespoten. Met twee pinnen kan het sieraad op de borst gespeld worden. We zijn allebei heel blij met het resultaat.
I like out of the box assignments. A while ago I was asked for something special. Nadia was going to do her PhD on long covid and the lungs play an important role in her research. For het PhD festive promotion, she wanted a large gold-coloured breast ornament in the shape of the alveoli. That was a very nice challenge. It took some research; casting in aluminium? Aluminium can be anodized in a lovely gold color. At least that was what I thougth, but cast aluminium apparantly not. And it would be to brittle too. Other metals would be too heavy. I eventually ended up with a 3D pen. With the 3D pen I 'drew' the alveoli in bio-plastics and then I sprayed them gold. With two pins, the piece can be pinned to the chest. We are both very happy with the result.
